How can a product photo company help my eCommerce business?

High quality product photos has a major impact on your sales figures. Assuming you don’t have the expertise and equipment in house, you’ll need a studio to do it for you.

Today, many importers choose to have photos taken by specialized Ecommerce photo studios in Hong Kong and Mainland China. While the cost is a factor, it’s primarily about speed – as local photo studios can deliver high quality images before your shipment arrives.

Can I ask my supplier to take photos for free?

No, your factory is not a professional photography studio. They don’t have the expertise, equipment and facilities to take high quality product photos.

At best, they can take a few shots in their factory warehouse, using their smartphone. But, that will hurt sales more than anything else.

Some sourcing companies also offer product photo services, but I recommend that you either take photos yourself or work with a professional studio – be that here in Asia or in the West.

How much does it cost per photo?

Ecommerce product photo studios can charge anything from a few dollars, to over a hundred dollars, per photo. It all depends on the number of photos per product, resolution and the equipment required.

Should I pick a studio in Hong Kong or Mainland China?

I generally recommend Hong Kong based studios, over those in Mainland China. The reason is that most studios in Mainland China are primarily producing product photos for the domestic eCommerce industry.

That is not necessarily a bad thing, but the ‘aesthetics’ on Taobao.com compared to, for example, Amazon.com can be rather different.

How do I send samples to the studio?

You can instruct your supplier to send product samples directly to the studio. Clearly, you have to book the photoshoot directly with the studio before samples are sent over.
