What is wheat straw plastic?

Wheat straw is the dry stalk of the wheat plant after the grains are removed. Traditionally, farmers would burn out the wheat straw and use the ashes as fertilizers. In recent years, wheat straw has gained popularity as an eco-friendly and sustainable material, especially in the food contact products and accessories industry.

Researchers found out that lignin, a kind of organic polymer that is contained in the tissue of the plants, can be combined with sugar to manufacture biodegradable food contact products and other accessories.

Additionally, manufacturers often process wheat straw with Polypropylene (PP), Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), or other petroleum derivatives to create more durable and resistant wheat straw plastic products.

That said, when combined with petroleum derivatives, wheat straw products are not 100% biodegradable. Still, wheat straw products can still be deemed as more eco-friendly products as the amount of plastic materials necessary to manufacture such products is reduced. Another important factor that induces massive attention to wheat straw is the high yield, high accessibility, and low cost of the raw materials.

Is wheat straw plastic a composite?

Manufacturers often mix wheat straw with PP, TPU, or other petroleum derivatives to create wheat straw plastic composites. The combination of wheat straw with polymers are proven to have better performance in tensile and flexural properties when compared to pure plastic products.

For example, a study done by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) shows that the tensility of 30% wheat straw and 70% polypropylene composite samples are twice as strong as the virgin polypropylene (PP).

In particular, polypropylene has a tensile modulus of 1.7 GPa (Gigapascals), while the average value of wheat straw composite blends is 3.3 GPa. And the average flexural value of wheat straw-PP composite is 2.5 times greater than virgin PP.

From a practical standpoint, after considering the mechanical property, durability, and other factors, the higher the percentage of wheat straw used as the filler in the composite, the more economically effective the products are.

The same study shows that producing a 30% wheat straw and 70% polypropylene formulation costs around US$0.559 per pound, whereas a 50% wheat straw and 50% polypropylene formulation costs around US$0.465 per pound.

Currently, most wheat straw products have wheat straw content ranging from 30% to 70%. Note that a higher percentage of wheat straw alters the properties of the composite, such as its flexibility or durability.
