How much does a quality inspection in Vietnam cost?

Most companies charge between US$350 to US$400 per inspection in Vietnam. This is significantly higher than in China, where an inspection sometimes can be booked for less than US$200.

While labor costs are lower in Vietnam, the supply chain service industry is not nearly as developed or competitive as in China.

Why are so many China-based QC companies offering inspection services in Vietnam?

If you’re currently importing products from China you’ll probably be familiar with many of the companies listed in this article. The ‘on-demand’ quality inspection industry was essentially born in Hong Kong and Mainland China – and where their customers go they follow.

Note that many of these companies don’t have their own offices in Vietnam, but operate through partner agencies or even individual inspectors. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as it’s their internal procedures and protocols that really matters – in house staff or not.

Further, many of the Hong Kong and Mainland China-based agencies, such as QIMA and Sofeast, have invested in sophisticated online booking platforms. It will take a while before the Vietnam headquartered firms are on par with their northern competitors – but they’ll get there eventually.

Quality Inspections in Vietnam: Pro QC International Ltd Q&A

In this Q&A, Daniel Ben-Ezra of Pro QC International Ltd explains what they have learned after more than 15 years performing quality inspections in Vietnam.

What types of products do you normally inspect in Vietnam?

For clients requesting standard quality control such inspections, we have traditionally inspected products such as:

  • Garments
  • Furniture (both indoor and outdoor)
  • Fashion accessories
  • Footwear
  • Bags
  • Household goods
  • Fittings

More recently and with Vietnam beginning to move up the value chain, we have seen a significant increase in requests for electronics, tools (hand & power), hardware goods and mechanical and industrial parts (e.g. castings, forgings, stampings, etc.).

Along with these new, higher-value products, we are also seeing more requests for supplier capability, quality system, social accountability, and sustainability audits.

Do you notice any difference between Vietnam and China in terms of quality issues?

As a rule, quality issues are quite standard in the 88 countries in which we provide services. As such, the defects you find on an inspection report from a factory in Vietnam are largely the same as in China.

That coupled with the fact that many factories in Vietnam (especially in the north of the country around Hanoi) have Chinese management or even Chinese ownership, the level of quality is largely the same.

The challenges can come in when conducting more ‘invasive’ services such as audits or supplier development where the local Vietnamese staff are not as used to having outsiders asking questions or looking over their shoulder.

In which cities and provinces in Vietnam do you normally carry out inspections?

Pro QC carries out inspections and other quality solutions in the major industrial hubs around Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. Factories are normally located between 30 minutes and 2 hours from the city center which is convenient and keeps travel costs to a minimum.

When looking in more detail at the map of Vietnam, we have resources that can easily reach the following provinces: Hai Phong, Bac Ninh, Binh Phuoc, Binh Duong, Long An, and Dong Nai.

As the country is much smaller than China, reaching all these provinces on a standard MD rate is no issue.

Are there any particular QC-related challenges in Vietnam that importers should be aware of?

As mentioned, a buyer can expect similar quality issues wherever they would produce in Asia or the rest of the world for that matter. We do not recognize Vietnam as having a particular set of quality problems vs. other countries, but naturally, there are challenges to consider.

The first is that the infrastructure in Vietnam inferior to China. Vietnam does not have a high-speed rail network or any significant motorways. You can usually reach your factory, regardless of location, in one-stop by air from abroad, however, after arrival car travel will be slower than one might expect if used to city to city travel in China.

As mentioned above, with Chinese and Korean management and ownership of some factories, you might we’ve found clients who require both Vietnamese and Chinese speaking quality engineers.

How do QC costs in Vietnam compare to China?

QC costs are largely the same around Asia and Vietnam is no exception. Although the average cost of labor is lower in Vietnam than, say, China, there is a dearth of engineering talent which means everyone is trying to get their hands on the same few resources.

The Vietnamese economy was already booming before the onset of the trade war and protectionist measures. As such, the labor market has gotten even tighter over the last couple of years with young talent regularly switching jobs to increase their earning power.
