What is sugarcane bagasse?

Sugarcane bagasse is the remnant of sugarcane stalk after being pressed out of the juice and extracted with sugars. Sugarcane bagasse is mainly composed of cellulose (32%-34%), hemicellulose (19%-24%), lignin (25%-32%), wax (2%-6%) and extractives (6%-12%). This article explains the details.

According to a study conducted by researchers from São Paulo State University, 1 ton of sugarcane generates 140 to 280 kg of bagasse, and the global production amount of sugarcane bagasse reached up to 300 million tons in 2017.

Is sugarcane bagasse plastic a composite?

Yes. Composite products are composed of two or more than two materials of relatively dissimilar properties but together form into products with better performance than either of the separate materials.

Sugarcane bagasse can be mixed with other materials to create composite materials in the food contact products, packaging, and construction industries. For example, in the construction industry, bagasse fiber is mixed with cement and sand to create reinforced cement or bricks.

Attempts to use sugarcane bagasse as raw materials to produce paper dated back to the 1930s in Peru. Bagasse fibers are about 1.7mm long, making them suitable as raw materials of tissue, corrugating medium, newsprint, and writing papers. In addition, using the byproduct of sugarcane on the one hand increases the agricultural economic benefits of sugarcane, on the other hand, slows down the deforestation process globally.

Studies have also shown that, compared to wood pulps, bagasse requires less bleaching chemicals to achieve a bright, white sheet of paper, which makes bagasse paper less polluted than wood.

Packaging
