Silk Suppliers in China: A Complete Guide

silk fabric

About to import silk scarves, fabric rolls or other silk products from China? In this article, we list some of China’s established silk producers and trading companies, based in Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Shanghai.

We also explain what all Silk importers must know about chemical regulations, silk labeling requirements and minimum order quantity.

Production Clusters in Mainland China

Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces, in eastern China, are the traditional production clusters for silk. Today, suppliers are not entirely concentrated to Zhejiang and Jiangsu.

However, as you can see in this supplier list, companies based in this region are still among the top silk exporters.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that their silk is exclusively produced there. In fact, many Silk suppliers are trading companies, buying raw materials from local producers in various provinces.

Also notice that many Silk suppliers are not apparel makers. They supply silk fabrics, but you may need to work with another factory to produce the final goods.

REACH, CA Prop 65 & Silk Labeling

Silk fabrics are, like other textiles and consumer goods, subject to chemical and heavy metals regulations. For example, Importers in the European Union must ensure that all imported products are REACH compliant.

You can request a test report from the supplier, or submit fabric samples to a compliance testing company, such as Intertek or Asiainspection.

In addition, all textile products must be correctly labelled. In the United States, apparel labels must include the following:

  • Fiber composition (i.e.100% Silk)
  • Care labels (ASTM)
  • Made in China

Labeling gets more complex if your product is only partly made of silk fabrics, as explained in this guide by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

MOQ Requirements

Most Silk fabric suppliers set the MOQ on a fabric length basis, for example 300 meters. Keep in mind that there are various MOQs to keep track of.

Some suppliers may offer a lower MOQ for ‘standard colors, while the MOQ is higher for ‘custom colors’ or patterns.

Most Silk suppliers are based in Zhejiang and Jiangsu, west of Shanghai

Where can I find other suppliers?

While silk only makes up a fraction of China’s textile industry, there are of course far more suppliers in this industry than listed in this article.

If you want to find other suppliers, head over to Alibaba.com and Globalsources.com – the two leading supplier directories for all silk and other textile products.

If you rather meet suppliers face to face, you should consider the annual Canton Fair in Guangzhou, or the HKTDC fair in Hong Kong.
