The definition of organic cotton might be slightly different, depending on the countries or contexts. Roughly speaking, organic cotton refers to cotton that is ‘naturally cultivated without the use of any synthetic agricultural chemicals such as fertilizers, pesticides or transgenic technology.’
In the United States, cotton that meets the requirements of the National Organic Programme (NOP), US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is considered ‘organic’.
According to the globally leading and reputable non-profit organization Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), organic cotton must comply with any standards approved by the IFOAM (International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements), such as:
a. Regulation (EC) 834/2007 organic production and labeling of organic products
b. USDA National Organic Program (NOP)
c. APEDA’s National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP)
d. China Organic Standard GB/ T19630

The Global Organic Textile Standard, short for GOTS, is a certification agency that provides third-party testing and certification services to parties from the fabric and textile industry and supply chain. The Global Organic Textile Standard was founded by four organizations:
a. Organic Trade Association (OTA, USA)
b. Internationaler Verband der Naturtextilwirtschaft (IVN, Germany)
c. Soil Association (UK)
d. Japan Organic Cotton Association (JOCA, Japan).
Requirements
The GOTS defines the high-grade environmental requirements and social standards of the entire textile production chain. The purpose of GOTS is to ensure the safety, ecology, sustainability, and social responsibility of the textile products and production process, from the screening of raw materials to the labeling of tags and packaging, to the end consumers.
The GOTS is a voluntary industry standard, but it is followed by many suppliers, manufacturers, wholesalers, and other providers throughout the textile supply chain as a quality assurance method for their textile products.
In order to comply with the GOTS, fabrics or textiles must not contain certain substances, including the following:
In addition, GOTS prohibits the use of auxiliaries that contain genetically modified organisms (GMO) or their enzymes and the use of auxiliaries that are based on functional nano-particles.
Also, in order to achieve GOTS certification, a minimum amount of the fiber material used in the textiles or fabric must be certified as organic. The GOTS label grade ‘made with organic’ requires a minimum of 70% certified organic fibers. The GOTS label grade ‘organic’ requires a minimum of 95% certified organic fibers.
