Scams: Beware of scams involving medical products. The risk of payment fraud and delivery of non-compliant and/or inferior products is high at this time.

Export Bans: Some countries enforce export bans on certain products. Export bans enforced after you have placed an order can result in a total loss – or severe delay.

Before you order

Here are our recommendations for importers planning to order medical products.

It’s currently a seller’s market for many medical products, with more demand than supply. Expect higher unit prices for more products.

The Minimum Order Quantities (MOQ) requirements are also higher than normal. Some suppliers don’t accept orders valued less than USD 100,000.

Payment Terms

Some suppliers may insist on a 100% pre-payment, before starting production. We still advise that you only pay a 30% deposit and 70% balance after quality inspection and lab testing.

Product Compliance

Medical devices and equipment are regulated in the United States and the European Union. Such regulations are there for a reason – to ensure that the product is not worthless (which is a risk) – and will not go away due to the current COVID-19 outbreak. You must request and verify test reports and other compliance documents (e.g. DoC) before placing an order.

Medical Goggles Buyer’s Guide

Anti-Splash Medical Goggles

In some of the medical procedures, anti-splash medical goggles play an important role in preventing chemical splashes, or droplets of liquid. These medical goggles are usually polished with splash-free coating.

Anti-splash medical goggles protect users against any physical or chemical harm in the workplace environment. Moreover, anti-splash goggles can keep your vision clear during a medical procedure. Note that anti-splash medical goggles are often made of polycarbonate anti-fog lenses as well.

Direct Vented Medical Goggles

Direct vented medical goggles feature ventilation holes, which are usually placed around the top or side of the goggles frame. These goggles can still help to prevent large flying particles during the medical procedure, however, they provide less protection from chemical, liquids or small particle material compared to unvented medical goggles.

Direct vented medical goggles provide a smooth airflow while working, and the venting system can prevent fogging on the goggles. In addition, direct vented medical goggles are often made of scratch-resistant lenses.

Direct vented medical goggles are suitable for the user that works with dry and large particles, while they cannot provide sufficient protection for chemical or liquid as they are usually not considered anti-splash.

Anti-impact Medical Goggles

Anti-impact medical goggles provide protection from impact hazards such as flying particles, liquid or any other high-speed fragments. The goggles usually form a protective seal to fit the user’s face, to prevent objects entering from the top or the bottom.

Anti-impact medical goggles are usually equipped with adjustable headband and strap for easy bending. This bending property provides resistance to energy impact, in order to prevent harm to the user.

Medical Safety Glasses

Conversely to goggles, safety glasses provide a lower level of protection to the user’s face. In particular, they cannot provide protection to certain hazards such as flying particles and liquid, because these substances can still make through small gaps.

However, safety glasses can still protect users from large particles and other flying objects as they provide a low to medium impact resistance. Compared to goggles, safety glasses are usually less expensive, and they provide a better user experience due to its light-weight design.

Medical Face Shields

Compared to safety glasses and goggles, face shields provide more comprehensive protection to the users. Unlike safety glasses and goggles, face shields also protect the user’s nose, mouth, and neck from hazards such as flying objects and chemical splashes.

The disadvantage of a medical face shield is their heavyweight. As such, it might cause an uncomfortable experience to certain users if they use it for a long time. Also, medical face shields don’t protect against impact hazards.

When dealing with high-speed flying objects, face shields can be worn over safety goggles to provide additional protection. In this case, they can provide extra impact resistance to flying objects or potentially infectious material in the medical environment.

European Union

Medical safety glasses, goggles, and face shields are considered Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and mainly regulated under the PPE Directive in the EU. They are usually classified as Class II or Class III depending on the application to different hazards including chemical splashes or flying debris. Further, EN 166 covers personal eye protection requirements in general. However, some equipment might still fall under the Medical Devices Directive.

United States

In the US, medical goggles need to comply with FDA requirements, including device registration and GMP. Also, the lens for spectacles and/or sunglasses must be certified as impact resistant under 21 CFR Part 801.410.

Nonmedical protective goggles are subject to OSHA regulations to ensure product performance against harms such as chemical splash or flying debris. For instance, the OSHA requires that PPEs must comply with ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 standards.

The ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 standard prescribes the design, performance, marking, and other relevant requirements of the PPEs. Before the importation, importers shall either obtain a test report from the supplier or book a third-party lab testing for the eyewear products.
