Yes, there are currently more than 1300 furniture and homeware suppliers from India, listed on Alibaba.com.
Many Indian factories also list products on Hong Kong-based Globalsources.com – or one of the local supplier directories:
Online sourcing is perhaps not ideal when it comes to furniture. For those looking for Indian furniture factories, attending a trade show tend to be a better option.
Below follows an overview of furniture and home products trade shows in India:
Most nationalities can apply for online visas prior to visiting a trade show in India. Hence, you don’t need to obtain an invitation letter, or even visit your local embassy or consulate.
Many Indian manufacturers also attend many trade shows in Hong Kong.
India International Furniture Fair or IIFF in an annual event and India’s largest furniture fair exhibition that takes place in November in Mumbai every year.
Visiting India is not as easy as some other countries on our list. You need a visa to visit the business events in the country. India only allows visa-free entry to three neighboring countries, Maldives, Nepal, and Bhutan.
The event is relatively small if compared to other exhibitions on our list, but you can still explore many product categories like:
Venue: NSE Nesco Complex, Off Western Express Highway, Goregaon East, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400063
Indian Furniture Expo, also known as IFEX, is another major furniture exhibition in India that will take place in September. It is an annual event that takes place every year in August or September.
It is also not a big event compared to Mainland China and Hong Kong-based exhibitions, but it still attracts around 25,000 visitors, mostly local, every year. Most of the exhibitors are also from India.
You can also find a wide range of products that include:
The event is organized by Introductions Trade Shows Pvt, Ltd.
Venue: Nehru Center, Worli, Mumbai
Labor costs in India are significantly lower, compared to those in China and Thailand. A lower labour cost can result in a 10 to 15% unit cost reduction, but not more than that.
Further, Indian furniture manufacturers are the most competitive when using locally sourced wood and other materials.
Using materials from other countries naturally drives up the unit cost, as it results in higher import duties and other fees.
English is an official language in India, which is a blessing for western importers. Many Indians are native English speakers, as they use the language among themselves – and not only when foreign business owners knock on their door.
Those of us who have worked with suppliers in China know how refreshing it can be to be able to have meaningful communication with your supplier.
Further, Indian suppliers also enjoy unrestricted internet. You can communicate with them using Skype, Email, Whatsapp or Facebook. The choice is yours.
In Mainland China, Whatsapp and other apps are banned, so it can be hard to even get in touch with your supplier these days.
That said, the language is not the only barrier to consider.
In my experience, it’s as important to provide crystal clear specifications and instructions to your Indian manufacturer, like those in other countries.
While the Indians may speak your language, they can’t read your mind.
Buying furniture samples will cost you far more than it costs to jump on a flight to Mumbai or Bangalore, and then visit furniture manufacturers on site.
For example, most suppliers charge at least three times the regular unit price for product samples, and LCL shipping fees from India starts from $500 per cubic meter.
In addition, it will also take at least 1 month before the sample is made, and another month for shipping.
But there is a better way.
Virtually all export-focused furniture factories in India have showrooms, with tens or even hundreds of different SKUs.
While in the showroom, you can select products, confirm materials and even get quotations.
Hotels and travel expenses in India are very low, so you will save a ton of time and money.
Indian manufacturers are no strangers to price negotiations themselves. In fact, it’s even expected.
Try to negotiate a price that is 10% to 15% lower than the original quote, and make sure you compare prices between different factories.
If you want to go beyond that, you will need to consider using cheaper materials. Just make sure you don’t push your supplier too hard, or they may ‘reduce’ the quality standard without telling you.
That can result in severe quality issues further down the line.
You need to make sure you get all technical specifications and materials right.
Misunderstandings happen all the time, even when dealing with sales reps that speak fluent English.
A sales contract should include the following:
Some Indian manufacturers may have standard contract templates, but make sure that they cover everything above. You can also use the template provided as part of our Starter Package.
You should work with a forwarder based on your own country, that can help you with shipping from India. You will not need to pay import duties or other taxes in India, but you need to work with a forwarder that has experience with the customs processes and import taxes in your country.
You should also ask your Indian manufacturer to issue a country of origin certificate.
It can be used to get a reduced duty rate in some countries.
Most established quality control companies have inspectors located in India. This includes our partners Sofeast and QIMA, both of which offer quality check services in India.
They can, for example, check the following:
You can expect to receive the quality inspection report (PDF) within 1 working day after the inspection takes place.
Expect to pay around US$400 per quality check.
