There are hundreds of suppliers, both trading companies and manufacturers, on both Alibaba.com and Globalsources.com.

More than 858,000 products 1,070 suppliers are listed under the Pet product category on Alibaba.com.

The same search on Globalsources.com results in more than 52,800 products and 3,359 suppliers.

You can be sure that there are manufacturers for all kinds of pet products online.

Product Regulations for Pet Products

With the exception of pet food, there few if any mandatory safety standards that apply specifically to pet toys and accessories.

However, as explained in this whitepaper by Intertek, there are pet products regulations underway.

In fact, a bill has already been proposed in New York state.

So, what will this mean for pet product importers?

a. There will be chemical and heavy metals regulations in place

b. Labeling and document requirements may apply

c. Lab testing may become mandatory

That said, there are non-pet product-specific regulations that do apply:

a. REACH is mandatory in the EU, for all products.

b. ‘Made in China’ labels is mandatory for all products sold in the US

c. Textile labeling requirements may apply

d. Additional regulations apply to all electronics, regardless of usage

There are a few things you can do already:

a. Ensure compliance with REACH and/or CA Prop 65

b. Ensure that your product is correctly labeled, and issue all mandatory documents

c. Submit a product sample for compliance testing

Overall, pet products are not as strictly regulated as children’s products, electronic, or even food contact materials.

What should I look for when selecting a supplier online?

First, you need to look at the category. If you intend to buy stainless steel dog cages, make sure you find a supplier that is specialized in making just that product. Stay away from traders that offer a bit of everything. Even if it’s still within the pet product space.

Second, you should also consider suppliers that match the following:

a. Registered capital higher than RMB 2,000,000

b. ISO 9001 certified

c. BSCI or Sedex registered

Environmental management and certification is also increasingly important in China. Ask if your supplier can provide an ISO 14001 certificate.

Quality Control

Pre-shipment quality inspections are mandatory when importing all sorts of products from China, and elsewhere in Asia.

That said, quality inspections for pet products can be fairly complicated.

For example, the inspector must simulate how a cat or dog is using a certain toy.

Using test standards (i.e., ASTM or ISO) for children’s toys is not enough for pet toys and accessories is not adequate, due to the extreme wear and tear of pet toys.

While this may not require advanced equipment, it’s crucial that you instruct your agent on how they should execute all tests, to properly ‘simulate’ normal wear and tear.

MOQ Requirement

The Minimum Order Quantity requirement is often set on a per-product basis.

A few examples follow below:
