Importing clothes and textiles from China? Keep reading, and learn what you must know about sourcing clothes manufacturers, fabric specifications and design drawings.

We also explain how you can reduce the Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) requirement and compliance testing costs by streamlining the use of fabrics and colors.

Sourcing Clothing Suppliers in China: What to look for

a. Product Scope

Product focus is the primary factor qualifying potential apparel manufacturers. Clothing factories are specialized in making certain types apparel, which also is reflected on their material subcontractors and machinery.

You’ll get an idea of a supplier product scope by quickly reviewing their website or supplier page on Alibaba or Global Sources.

That said, the business scope, as specified on the supplier’s business license, can be even more telling. Below follows an example:

High-grade fabric weaving, dyeing and finishing; clothing, textile products in the production, processing, sales of the company products, and related products in the acquisition of export business.

We can tell, from the business scope above, that this supplier is an export oriented textile fabric manufacturer.

If there is no mention of ‘production’, ‘manufacturing’ or specific production procedures, the supplier is likely a trader. That category of supplier also tends to include a large number of product categories in its scope.

b. Product Compliance Track Record

Buyers in many markets, mainly the United States and the European Union, must ensure compliance with various product standards and regulations. When it comes to textiles, there is a variety of substance restrictions in place, limiting the content of formaldehyde, lead and AZO dyes – among others.

However, few apparel manufacturers can provide compliance documents (i.e., test reports). Thus making it hard to assess a clothing supplier capability to produce compliant goods.

Instead, compliance documents are far more often held by textile fabrics subcontractors, and overseas buyers, rather than the apparel factory.

That being said, our experience tells us that the risk of non-compliance (i.e., a product that fails compliance testing) is low, when importing clothes from China.

Our clients have submitted material samples for REACH and California Proposition 65 testing on a frequent basis in the last few years, and very few have failed testing.

There is, however, one exception. Coated fabrics. Buyers of waterproof fabrics with TPU or PVC coating must take extra care, as the coating may contain phthalates and other restricted substances.

clothing check

c. Quality Management System and Social Compliance

A Quality Management System (i.e, ISO 9001:2008) is implemented in the supplier’s production flow to track and limit defects.

Among clothing manufacturers, far from all suppliers hold QMS certification. Clothes importers are wise to not rely on the suppliers to manage quality, but shall implement their own quality assurance procedures.

Social compliance has been a hot topic in the industry in recent years. Especially since the collapse of Rana plaza in April 2013. That occurred in Dhaka, Bangladesh, not in China. I’d also dare to say the (overall) degree of workplace safety is higher in China, compared to other Asian manufacturing destinations.

That being said, a supplier with social compliance audit reports at hand are to be preferred. Look for suppliers with BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative) and Sedex certification.

What to Include in the Techpack

a. Fabric Specifications

Fabric specifications can be based on an existing ‘standard fabric’ or an OEM specification. The latter may result in a vast increase of the lead time, and the MOQ. We’ll back to the MOQ in a bit, but first follows a list of fabric specifications:

  • Material / Fiber Composition (i.e., 98% Cotton, 2% Spandex)
  • Weight (i.e., 240 gsm)
  • Yarn Count (i.e., 40 x 40)
  • Yarn Type (i.e., Combed)
  • Colors (Pantone or RAL)
  • Treatment (i.e., Flame Retardance)
  • Coating (i.e., PU Coating)

Notice that clothing factories generally procure fabrics from textiles manufacturers. Most clothing suppliers can provide lists of generic cotton and synthethic textiles offered, through their network of subcontractors.

However, if you have specific fabrics requirements (i.e., Bamboo rayon, Organic Cotton or OEKO Tex Standard 100 Fabrics), you should go directly to a textiles manufacturer. That will make it a lot easier to find the right type of fabrics.

The process is best explained in these two articles:

made in china label

b. Bill of Materials (Components)

All components must be listed in the bill of materials, and may include everything from fabric pieces to zippers. The quantity of each component, on a per unit basis, must also be specified.

  • Buttons
  • Zippers
  • Velcro
  • Seam material

c. Design

Design elements can be replicated from reference samples, or design drawings. However, limiting yourself to only one of two is unwise. A physical sample provides a much needed reference product for the supplier during the sample development process.

However, design elements must also be communicated as design drawings, which also serves as attachments to sales contracts and other product documentation.

  • Reference samples
  • Sample photocopies
  • Design drawings

The design drawings shall also show the position of washing labels, prints and embroideries, for the sake of reducing the risk of misunderstandings.

d. Size Table

Size Table Sample

A size table lists dimensions for all sizes. This is a complement to the design drawing, on which the various measurements are to be specified (i.e., chest width and length). The following measurements may be included:

  • Chest
  • Hem
  • Length
  • Arm
  • Collar (Front)
  • Collar (Back)
  • Shoulder Width

d. Logos

All print and embroidery files must be provided in either .ai or .eps format. Include the following:

  • Washing Labels
  • Embroidery
  • Print further explains why the Techpack is critical when outsourcing apparel production to Chinese, and other Asian, manufacturers.

Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ)

When importing clothes from China, the MOQ is usually set at around 500 to 1000 pcs per product. There is a reason for this. Clothing manufacturers must purchase a certain quantity from the textile fabrics and component suppliers.

This quantity requirement is then reflected on the MOQ the clothing manufacturer must set.

Clothing suppliers are not only setting MOQ requirements per product (i.e., design), but also per color, fabric and size. Hence, clothing importers must request the following MOQs from prospective apparel makers:

  • MOQ per Fabric
  • MOQ per SKU
  • MOQ per Color
  • MOQ per Size

For further clarification of how the MOQ is structured, an example follows below:

  • MOQ per Fabric: 1000 pcs (Set by subcontractor)
  • MOQ per SKU: 500 pcs (Indirectly by subcontractor)
  • MOQ per Color: 500 pcs (Set by subcontractor)
  • MOQ per Size: 250 pcs (Set by Clothes supplier)

Clothing suppliers are generally more willing to offer a lower MOQ when it’s in their own control to do so. As we see in the list above, the SKU MOQ is often based on the MOQ per color.

The latter is in turn set by the fabrics supplier, rather than the clothing factory.

This is even more obvious when we look at the Size MOQ, for which the supplier can afford to be more flexible. This also explains why a lower order volume results in a limited material option.

shipping cartons

Reducing the MOQ requirement when importing clothing

Now, 500 pcs per SKU is not a terribly large volumes. It’s barely enough to keep a medium sized clothes factory running for more than a couple of hours.

However, most brands are not limited to only one product. Hence, an MOQ requirement of 1000 units per product is multiplied by the number of SKUs in your catalog. A

s such, startup brands and small businesses have the following options:

  1. Reduce the number of SKUs
  2. Reuse fabrics and colors on as many SKUs as possible

Option 2 enables the supplier to both satisfy the MOQ requirements set by subcontractors, while offering its overseas buyers a reduced MOQ. As said, Clothes manufacturers can afford to be a bit more flexible when it comes to the processes they manage in house. For example, cutting and sewing.

Yet, expect a reduced volume to result in an increased unit price.

This strategy offers another benefit. Substance testing costs (i.e., REACH and California Proposition 65) are largely based on the number the number of fabrics and colors. Hence, compliance testing costs can be vastly reduced by limiting the number of fabric and colors used to make a collection.

Most countries only require the importer to provide material test reports (if any applicable substance regulations), rather than product specific test reports (with the notable exception of children’s clothing).

Shipping Textiles and Apparel from China

Clothing is a high volume product. As air freight charges quickly run up due to ‘Volumetric charges’, shipping by sea is the only viable mode of transportation – for anything but minor sample deliveries.

Sea freight charges are based on three factors; Incoterm, volume and destination.

      I am Emma, from China,
we run the big swimwear factory since 1990s. but the business abroad goes very slow.
how can I deal with this situation.
our factory is the biggest in north of China. but with so less good customer. we really dont know how to explore the business.

      1. ChinaImportal at 5:30 am

        Hi Emma,

Then you need to get better at marketing and sales. The times are changing, and you are probably waking up way too late to this fact.

Many suppliers have been very arrogant towards their buyers, and on top of that – failed to improve their internal procedures.

A good (but late) start would be to ask what your business can do for your customers, and not the other way around (which is the standard mode of operation)

    47. Amy at 4:20 pm

Hi, thanks for this information it has really helped me, I’m based in the UK and am looking to set up my own business supplying hats and bibs, stupidly i have rushed into buying some samples without considering the regulations which i imagine won’t be compliant when they arrive.
Are these items classed as clothes or accessories? i read in your other blog that accessories don’t have regulations but children’s clothing does therefore I’m little confused and would appreciate your help-thanks.

      1. ChinaImportal at 11:09 am

        Hi Amy,

No, it’s not true that there are no regulations that apply to accessories. What we meant is that there may not be any regulations that apply specifically to accessories.

But, there are regulations (labelling and substance restrictions) that apply to basically all consumer products, accessories included.

However, first we need to know this: Which market are you based in?

Hello, I am looking for information on the best places to buy baby and girls boutique clothing to resell in the USA. What rules and regulation I need to know. Who to buy from and what to look out for. And any tricks or pointers will help. Thank you!

      1. ChinaImportal at 5:23 am

        Hi Ashley,

You need to be aware of the following regulations:

        1. CPSIA
        2. CA Prop 65
        3. FHSA
        4. FFA

In addition, there are apparel labelling requirements that you need to be aware of. Our Compliance Guide: Apparel & Textiles (United States), could help answering many of your questions. However, it’s not focused on children’s clothing.

I plan to open up a women’s online store and have been considering purchasing items from Alibiba for resell but I’m unsure if all of their items are replicas of established brands in the US. Can I place my logo on the items on Alibiba/Aliexpress. Ultimately like most people I want to provide my clients with an excellent product but I also want to make sure I avoid as many lawsuits as possible. If you have any recommendations it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

        Hi Kia,

What you find on Alibaba is not “ready made” goods but reference products, showcasing what the suppliers is able to produce

I have bought some kids stuff from aliexpress and dh gate, items seem in good quality but the labels are in Chinese. I am starting up my website and I don’t want to break any rules or lose customers by selling items where the labels aren’t in English (including care labels).

Can you please advise on what I can do?

      Kind Regards,

      Hollie Cagney

      1. Fredrik Grönkvist at 3:35 am

        Hi Hollie,

You are probably breaking more rules than just labeling requirements. Assuming you are based in the UK, you may need to ensure compliance with REACH and EN 71, including submitting samples for third party testing. I advise you to not resell these products.

Thanks for the great article and your generosity.

Our company is having some trouble finding a quality factory to produce high end children and baby accessories. We are well versed with all applicable US & EU standards.
We need a reputable factory that has an eye for detail and quality. Should be capable for machine and hand work. Factory could be in either in Asia or Europe, as long it can match quality, lead times and price point.
Would you be able to direct us?
      Thank you very much!

      HI Frederick,

Ive recently finished a degree in Chinese in Scotland and I’m looking to start my own brand of childrens clothing, starting with babies and venturing up to around the age of around 8/9. Having been to a factory in China that makes wedding dresses i’ve seen for myself that quality and some of the processes. However, i’m more concerned about the safety regulations and ensuring that the clothes are fit for wear. Do you have an any information regarding companies in China that make childrens clothings that also follow UK safety guidelines?

My friend and I are going to start our own clothing company (importing from China) and I was wondering what kind of info or tips you have on determining a good or bad supplier in terms of the working conditions of their factories and how the employees are treated.

      Hi Fredrik,
Your article was very helpful to gain an insight in importing clothes from china.
I am based out of India and i am planning to import women’s fashion apparels( Trousers, blouses, dresses, shoes, bags, fashion jewelry) from china and resell them in India.
I have been browsing through websites of wholesalers and manufacturers, reading reviews about them, trying to find any help that i can ( that’s how i landed here, at chinaimportal), but could not reach a concrete conclusion yet.
I would be extremely grateful if you could help me find some trustworthy wholesalers or manufacturers of women clothing. I am expecting the quality that we find at Zara, H&M, forever 21, etc. I do not wish to compromise with quality but i am looking at getting a good deal.
      Awaiting your response.
      Thanking you in anticipation.

        Hi Vidhi

I am interested in going the same direction as you, I’m based in Johannesburg, South Africa and wish to import ladies clothing similar to those found at Zara, Topshop, H&M etc. but am not willing to compromise on quality. Have you had any luck with suppliers/manufacturers, and if yes, would you be so kind as to point me in the direction of their websites. Thanks in advance, all the best in your business venture.

    92. Dhriti at 5:34 pm

      Hi Fredrik,

I am based out of India and i am looking at starting an e-commerce store mainly for women’s clothing and other quirky items.

My concern is how do i look for a genuine supplier? I am all in for ordering samples of everything, but i am confused whom to trust what with so many suppliers on Alibaba all proclaiming of high quality products. I do not want to go for low quality products.

Do you know any trusted suppliers?
Ways to look for them and know they are genuine?
Any other websites you would suggest to import these items from China/Bangkok?

      Looking forward to your response.

    93. Katarina at 2:24 pm

      Hej Fredrik!

(antar att du är svensk? tar de på engelska utifall ) I came across your website because I’ve been trying to do research for a business i want to start up in the end of this year. I’ve been looking on alibaba for months, and emailed several suppliers.. but I’m finding it hard to actually find what I’m looking for. This website is definitely helpful!

I’m a graphic designer and I’m designing my own patterns and prints for fabrics. I’ve previously ordered smaller quantities of fabrics from US , which has not been very cheap. From the fabric I’m been sewing quite basic children’s clothing , but I’m aware that once I start my business (online to start with ) i wont be able to keep up with the sewing myself. So I’m looking for a supplier that can 1. Print my patterns, on ORGANIC (very important) fabric. 2. Do the sewing ,Basic T-shirts and tights etc. I’m moving to Sydney in a few months and that’s where I’m looking to get the clothes shipped.

I’ve found places that does the fabric, and others that does the actual garments.. but I need to find a place that is good at both. And have the right certificates , showing that they use organic cotton. I found this really hard, and I don’t want to have to work across two different suppliers, I want it all from the same place.

Have you got any recommendations of suppliers working with organic cotton that also do their own printing?

      many thanks!

      1. Fredrik Grönkvist at 3:57 am

        Hello Katarina,

Very few ‘assembly suppliers’ manufacture their materials ‘in house’ – in this case fabrics. All components and fabrics are purchased from subcontractors. As an importer, you shall focus on sourcing apparel manufacturers, and let them handle fabrics procurement. Coordinating transactions within China, while abroad, is nothing I suggest you to do.

As for compliance, yes, don’t expect the suppliers to have a long list of ‘ready made’ test reports and other compliance documents – that’s very rare among textiles suppliers. However, they should be able to at least present some sort of substance test report.

        1. Asghar at 2:53 pm

          Hi Frederik,

          Greeting from Denmark!
I was thinking to start an online store for Drone Cams first for European Countries and then rest of the world. I want to know the procedure as how it could be done – will the supplier from China send individual items to every customer or do I have to collect and then send myself?

I am serious about this business and waiting for your input and ideas as how can I do it.

          Looking forward for your reply!

hi, i’ve read your article after having some frustration with my start up boutique. I am trying to start an online little girls boutique and although thinking i’ve researched enough, i’ve made my first purchase and realized i still have alot to learn. I honestly thought that the manufacturer sold me the items, charged me for shipping and everything else that i would be charged for, and now i find out of the various import tax, depending on what i’m brining in (pajamas, dresses, tops, etc) yet i still have no idea how or how much i pay to who and when. i’ve found a few manufacturers on alibaba and have also found a place called where you can buy as little as 1 item at a time and even see reviews from buyers. I’ve had an issue trying to buy with them (My US credit card for some reason won’t work on their site–they are encouraging me to use paypal and western union). if you have any tips it would be appreciated and settle the frustrations i’m having! thank you for a great article!

      Hi Frederick!
You are doing such a fabulous job on helping people out on such major queries and the general problems faced while importing from china!
I imported furniture from china 2 years back with my own designs and it was very successful.
Now, I’m planning to change my line of business to kids clothing and I have few queries too before I visit the canton fair phase 3! I’m sure to find good products, but I’m unsure about a few things. Will it be possible for me to select the designs available there? will sizes be a problem?? And the MOQ?
Plz enlighten me with the same! I would be grateful to you.. Cheers!

      Hi Fred,

I am interested in importing women clothing from China to Ecuador but I need a good manufacturer which produces good quality clothes. Having said that I have seen a lot of bad quality clothes from China selling at a very cheap price in South East Asia. My friends told me it is possible to get like 5 dollars per piece kinda clothes or dresses with decent quality from China if buy at wholesale price. I am a rookie at this line and I am starting from scratch. Would really appreciate it if you could guide me on the taxes and safety compliance which you mentioned if you know anything about Ecuador. Also, most importantly, I’m a lil confused about starting my own brand & design or just order those designs available in the factory. Also, I some bad experience buying clothes which looks and feels different from the picture. these are my concern. I hope you can guide me.

In fact, it was not easy at all as a start up.. For a moment you feel like a failure and everything Sucks especially when it comes to the sizes! Our sizes (Arabian Size) are as same as European sizes.

As we are planning to go soon to make the spring-summer 2015 collection order, we found online that Shishi & Enshi are the best cities that sell high quality clothes to Europe (which would be a perfect fit to our sizes).
My question is do you know any supplier or manufacturer to deal with especially we have no experience in both cities and we know nothing out there!
For that, I would really appreciate if you could assist us in this matter before planning for our visit!

      Thank you so much!

      Morning Fredrik,

This is Adham from Egypt. I’m seeking your help advising some reliable manufactures in China or in Asia where I can get in touch with regarding the manufacturing of sport clothes. Basically I’m trying to create my own brand and I’m willing to find deal with manufactures outside Egypt who can grant me certain features for the final product such as ( High quality finish that matches my expectations, Cut / fit , high quality fabrics & reasonable delivery time ) I would really much appreciate it if you could advise me some manufactures where I can contact or visit. Thanks in advance

      Hi Fredrik

A quick question: I am considering buying ladies clothing from china compliant with the UK standards on clothing. My hope is to buy ready made clothing which can easily be compared in quality to H&M and Zara. I wanted to find out if it is easy to find markets that sell this ready made clothing or all items have to be custom made? As l prefer to buy one piece items. Please advise whether this is viable in China. Thanks

      1. Fredrik Grönkvist at 10:02 am

        Hi Lillian,

No, you will not find markets in China with items manufactured in compliance with UK/EU standards. That said, an item can be “accidentally” compliant with, for example, REACH, but it’s a major gamble as you must first buy the items, then send them for compliance testing – something that’s also very expensive if you buy many different models, all made in different materials.

Awesome article. I am wanting to start an urban clothing brand, and I paint on the t shirts/sweatpants myself. I already have made the sweatpants and also t shirt samples from (customink) and want to know if you can recommend me a good place to have my designs put onto the sweatpants and t shirts?
Also would like to show you pictures if you have the time,
      Thanks you!

Hello, I’m in the process of opening a brick & mortar children’s boutique & I plan on importing from china to the US, but I’m not sure what to do about the clothing labels & material labels on the clothes I’ve already ordered? Some have material labels but most do not. Please help!

      1. Fredrik Grönkvist at 6:01 pm

You must relabel the products to ensure compliance with applicable regulations. Did you ensure compliance with CPSIA and California Prop 65 before importing the items? (assuming its children’s clothing). Selling non-compliant items, especially toys and other children’s products, is illegal and may result in a forced recall, or major fines.

If i wish to import clothing from Hong Kong to Canada, does my business require an import permit or license?

      1. Fredrik Grönkvist at 6:47 pm

        Hello Cherith,

Most likely not, but you may need to show documents proving compliance with applicable substance regulations.

    134. brown at 11:28 pm

i don’t trust manufacturers on alibaba

      1. Fredrik Grönkvist at 12:40 pm

        Hello Brown,

What you need to think about when sourcing on Alibaba is that it’s a supplier directory. Thus, you find anything from small electronics traders to leading manufacturers. It’s not black and white, but certainly a lot of gray scales in between.

    135. brown at 11:25 pm

      nice article
please am a nigerian i import watches from aliexpress which i trust i need a manufacturer on alibaba that has a watch store on aliexpress to do business with because i trust sellers on alibaba.thanks male and female watches of high quality.

    136. sara at 8:25 am

Hi,Fred, as a baby and children clothes manufacturer from China,we export baby and children clothes for many years,we have not brand,we do OEM. Could you please recommend a suitable buyer for me ? thanks.

      1. Fredrik Grönkvist at 10:19 am

        Hello Sara,

That depends. Can you show previous compliance with product safety standards in the US (CPSIA), EU (REACH) or other markets? Baby and children’s clothing are highly regulated.

    137. Kristina at 7:58 pm

      Thanks for the article.
I am planning to sell maternity items in the US and would like to find a supplier who produces eco-friendly with organic cotton. The quality of the production process and materials is extremely important as I would like to offer my items to eco-conscious clients. I would also like to use my own designs and be sure that they are not going to be copied. Could you please recommend a suitable supplier for me? thanks

    138. Timothy Kinoti at 6:21 am

Hi Fred, thnks 4 this wonderful article. I would be glad if you could recommend reliable suppliers to me. I want to start a business of selling designer t-shirts and fashionable ladies tops all from China and of good quality and affordable price. I am based in Kenya. Thank You.

    139. Cindy at 5:25 pm

Many thanks for your interesting article.
I make hats from scratch but realise that I will never make the big bucks this way! I’d like to expand and have a question; do I have to give the factory in China my own design if I want to put my own label on it, or am I allowed to import straight off their website and attach my own label? Or would I be best to order ‘unfinished’ hats and trim them myself so that I am allowed to call it ‘hand finished in the UK’ and put my own label on?
      Many thanks in advance.

      1. Fredrik Grönkvist at 4:52 pm

        Hello Cindy,

Yes, you can either order a custom designed product (OEM) or brand an existing factory design (ODM). I suggest you read the following articles on this topic:

However, I am not sure if minor modifications would allow you to label the hats as “Made in the UK”.

    140. Mario Martinez at 5:31 am

      Hi Fredrick,
Congrats for your article, I’m based in USA (Massachusetts) and I’m thinking to sell purses and handbags online (by,etc…) for US customers. How difficult and expensive would it be the import taxes and regulations from china to USA concerning these items? Thanks

      1. Fredrik Grönkvist at 5:50 am

        Hello Mario,

Applicable regulations depend on various factors, including materials, whether or not the items are marketed to children and in which state you intend to sell in.

    141. Sophia at 9:02 am

The above article was very helpful. I am currently researching opening a boutique and online store in Ireland selling dresses mainly, I am looking for a supplier that can customise my products with labels and various other changes for example extra beading on straps on bandage dresses or embroidery ect. And also be able to produce items similar to ones I send photos ect off. Is this possible to find in china and what type of quantities would I need to be ordering to have a manufacturer do these extras for me??

      1. Fredrik Grönkvist at 3:03 am

        Hello Sophia,

I would estimate the MOQ at around 300 pcs per product. Sending images is not enough, you need to provide much more material than that. I suggest that you read this article:

    142. Heidi at 4:59 am

Hi! I have recently started an online boutique selling childrens clothing that I purchase fromDHgate and then resell them. It seems to be going very well for me but my Father in law brought up taxes. Do I legally need a resale license or a tax ID # to be doing this? I would love to continue in the direction I am going but I want to make sure its all legit?! THANKS

      1. Fredrik Grönkvist at 3:37 am

        Hello Heidi,

I assume you are based in the United States, is that correct? First of all, I think you have other issues to take care of. Very few products, if any, sold on DHgate are compliant with CPSIA. You can read more about that here:

        Have you tested your products?

    143. shalini at 1:32 pm

      Hi Fredrick!
How r u? A very nice elaborate and impressive article. You definitely gave me an insight on various stuff. My name is shalini and I am from India , I am planning to open my readymade western ladies online clothing line in here.
I am very impressed with the design and pattern in china.
Need your help in knowing which suppliers to contact and want to build a long term trust and relationship.
      Thanku so much in advance

    144. Nik at 6:09 pm

Hello. I have just started a fashion brand for both men and women. It’s so hard finding a manufacturing company for small businesses as I want to carry my own label. My business is based in Nigeria. Can you help please with any information of manufacturers that support small businesses. Thanks

    145. Jeanie Yip at 4:39 am

I’m intending to set up a online shop selling baby clothes however I don’t how & where to start.

Often when we buy online clothing, the material is much more inferior than we see in the picture. Can you give some pointers?

    146. Nancy Gulani at 7:23 pm

      Hi Fredrick,
I am keen on children clothing and women fashion clothes, could you help me identify sources.
This is for importing to India.
What are the other costs besides product cost.

    147. Lisa at 4:34 pm

      Hi Frederik,

Thank you for your article, it is very informative.

I am hoping to start an online business, selling “good quality” women’s sports bras. I have been looking at existing styles on alibaba, and I would much prefer my own style that I have in mind. Do I need to get a professional “designer” involved, or can I just do the designs myself? I have no fashion qualifications.

I am based in Australia. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much.

      1. Fredrik Grönkvist at 2:22 pm

        Hello Lisa,

That depends. You certainly need to provide your supplier with a design draft with actual dimensions, and material specifications. Don’t rely on a Chinese supplier to do the actual design for you.

    148. Sonia at 2:35 pm

      Hi Fredrik ,

just read ur article.. and it is really nice. I want to start my clothing store in India. Can u please help.

      1. Fredrik Grönkvist at 8:04 pm

        Hello Sonia,

Importing products to fill an entire clothing store is not viable for most small businesses. The MOQ requirement per design is often 400 – 500 pcs. I advice you to focus your investment on creating your own brand, and combine that will filler products.

    149. donsteve at 9:12 am

am donsteve from nigeria,am in interested in trading male and female clothing, buying cheap but above average quality jeans for male and female and also wholesale articles like calculators, key holders flashdrives etc, hoping you could point me to the rite direction.

      1. Fredrik Grönkvist at 9:58 am

        Hello Donsteve,

Since you are based in Nigeria, you need to:

a.) If these products are regulated by SONCAP
        – Read more:

b.) Find suppliers (for each product) that are able to comply with the SONCAP regulations.

    150. Lisa at 3:40 am

Hi a friend and I are looking at starting a kids clothes business can you point me into the right direction of where to start. What would be better import already made clothes or design and have made? We are looking at China/Thailand/Hong Kong
      Thanks heaps

      1. Fredrik Grönkvist at 9:56 am

That depends. “Ready made” items are made for the domestic Chinese market. Thus they are not compliant with foreign certification requirements. Which country are you based in?

    151. Mai at 4:20 am

      Hello Fredrik,
thank you for this great article. I am looking for manufacturers for baby’s clothes.and wedding dresses Is there an website, company that have information about manufacturers who really make products instead of agents? I need a good quality and I am visiting China soon. would you recommend a specific city??

      1. Fredrik Grönkvist at 7:55 pm

        Hello Mai,

Go to Suzhou, Jiangsu, for wedding dresses. However, baby clothes are more spread out over the country. Children’s products are also highly regulated in most countries. Therefore it’s critical that you confirm:

a.) The product safety standard that regulates baby clothes in your country
b.) Confirm if the supplier/s are able to comply with this standard

    152. Olivia at 10:34 am

Hi I’ve started an online fashion boutique, and I have a few wholesale suppliers. However there are some items I really want to sell but can’t find any suppliers! My customer base are all females, around 15-30 years old and wanting on trend fashion. I am particularly looking into ‘pom pom shorts’ as these are definitely going to sell well. Please let me know your thoughts! I am based in the U.K.

Hi, I am in the process of sourcing children’s clothing from China and think I have found a supplier on Alibaba. The only thing I’m really worried about is all the regulations on children’s clothing here in the UK. Please could you help.

      1. Fredrik Grönkvist at 10:04 am

        Hello Vanessa,

European Union directives also apply in the United Kingdom. In the case of children’s clothing, you need to ensure compliance with CE EN71 and REACH. We’ve already covered these topics, please click on the links below:

        Hello Sarah,

Which country are you based in? I’ll send you an email.

    161. Valerie at 8:01 pm

I have been looking through items on alibaba for the past couple weeks and I’m very intrigued by the thought of expanding my home based business. I currently sell on eBay and Amazon but I’m very interested in opening a childrens boutique on line and brick and Mortor. My concern is I’m seeing photos used by the alibaba designers that don’t look like their photos somm
I’m concerned they are replicating designs by designers and I fear I would get in trouble to selling replica items. I also would like to know if I could put my own label on the items. Thanks

      1. Fredrik Grönkvist at 4:00 am

        Hello Valerie,

Yes, design replicas is a big concern since it may result in a lawsuit from the IP holders. However, there are certain limitations to how far reaching this protection is for the designers. If the designs are “similar”, rather than outright copies, then it might be fine. However, I suggest that you check out, they write about these things.

Getting a product branded in China is very easy. What’s important is that you provide your supplier with a logo design file, dimensions, pantone color and printing position (on the item).

    162. L Heatley at 2:07 pm

Hi, I am starting my own boutique style shop on ebay. I am struggling to find a supplier who doesn’t have copied look-a-like bandage dresses. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

          Hi Frederik
I’m looking to open a business for babies and kids clothing. I’m looking for good tailor companies in China or Hong Kong to tailor based on pictures sent to them with a very high quality. Any recommendations?

        8. Andrea Parker at 8:17 pm

          Good day
Also interested in childrenswear for girls only age 2-6 ; mostly party / ballet dresses and party skirts. I want to import ready made product ( not produce my own designs) to supplement my South African manufactured and designed range; which is still in the planning phase. . I want to start with very small units . I looked on Ali press and saw not all good quality and quite cheap fabrics ; and prices would be quite high after pay South African customs duty . Therefore I would like some leads to websites where I can source better priced items. I can accept the cheaper look/ fabrics for now. I really would appreciate any guidance as new to this. Thank you !

    166. Ria at 8:00 am

      Hi Fredrik,

Your article was wonderful and absolutely true to anyone who has begun to work with Chinese manufacturers. I sell boutique vintage style flower girl dressesflower so it certainly caught my interest. I currently run a small, very successful business on etsy which I feel I have outgrown and I would like to expand to my own website. I am in the process of looking into finding reliable, high end Chinese manufacturers to make all of my designs. However, i don’t know where to begin. I want to avoid alibaba, aliexpress etc. as the factories seem to be copying the designs that are being sent to them and reselling them on etsy-i have been doing my research. My designs are my business so I would like to be directed if possible to manufacturers off f those sites that I can trust. Any help you could give would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you again for a great article!

      1. Fredrik Grönkvist at 11:25 am

        Hello Ria,

There’s nothing wrong with However, there is a huge quality difference (both in terms of product quality and management) between Chinese manufacturers. There’s no site that only hosts “good manufacturers” (a very vague term considering), instead the importer need to distinguish between organized manufacturers and disorganized garage traders.

Please send an email to if you got more questions. I think we might be able to help you out.

now the neighbouring countries are all cheaper than china..

and we have higher qualities and better english so that we can listen and provide you with better service and products

indonesia, vietnam, thailand, are now the new emerging manufacturers which is not only cheaper, but better in quality.
