    What is hemp textile?

Hemp fabric is made from the stalks of the Cannabis sativa plant. The tradition of using hemp to produce fabrics and textiles dates back thousands of years in China, Western Europe, and some areas of the Arabia Peninsula.

Hemp was also a common material in the textile industry in the United States back to the 1800s and the beginning of the 1900s when hemp was encouraged to harvest to suffice the army’s demands for cloth, sails, and ropes.

In the past century, the use of hemp has been largely challenged by cotton and other types of artificial fiber such as nylon and polyester. In addition, the restriction of marijuana (a variety of cannabis Sativa, which is often confused with hemp), has worsened the commercialization of hemp in the textile industry.

The key difference between hemp and marijuana is their concentration of THC, which is the main psychoactive component of marijuana. The THC level of hemp is lower than 0.3% by dry weight, which is not enough to cause hallucination or euphoric mood to the users.

    Advantages of hemp fabric

Hemp was rediscovered in the textile industries of Europe and the US recently. The advantages of hemp textiles include:

    a. High durability: more than 80% of the hemp fiber is constituted of cellulose and hemicellulose, which makes hemp stronger and more durable

    b. Abrasion resistance: according to the result showed by some tensile tests, hemp has eight times the tensile strength and four times the durability of other natural fibers such as cotton, silk, and wool.

    c. Naturally antimicrobial: Cannabinoid, the phenolic compounds of lignin contained by hemp, contributes to its antibacterial properties

    d. Naturally anti-ultraviolet radiation: the ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of pure hemp knitted fabric is more than 50, due to natural pigments and lignin in hemp fibers which act as UV absorbers. Fabric with a UPF factor of 50 is able to block 98% of the sun’s rays, which reduce the risk of skin cancer

    e. Water absorbent and good affinity to dye: This is due to the porous nature of the hemp fiber

    f. Consume less water than cotton to plant: a study conducted by the Stockholm Environment Institute estimated that the average water consumption to produce 1 kg of cotton is 10,000 liters, compared to 300-500 liters of water needed to produce 1 kg of dry hemp matter, of which 30% is suitable for fiber’s production.
