Warning

Scams: Beware of scams involving medical products. The risk of payment fraud and delivery of non-compliant and/or inferior products is high at this time.

Export Bans: Some countries enforce export bans on certain products. Export bans enforced after you have placed an order can result in a total loss – or severe delay. Further, lockdowns and under restrictions are also causing disruption – be it complete factory shutdowns or labor shortages.

Before you order

Here are our recommendations for importers planning to order medical products.

Prices

It’s currently a seller’s market for many medical products, with more demand than supply. Expect higher unit prices for more face masks and other medical supplies.

MOQ

The Minimum Order Quantities (MOQ) requirements are also higher than normal. Some suppliers don’t accept orders valued less than USD 100,000.

Payment Terms

Some suppliers may insist on a 100% pre-payment, before starting production. We still advise that you only pay a 30% deposit and 70% balance after quality inspection and lab testing.

Product Compliance

Medical devices and equipment are regulated in the United States and the European Union. Such regulations are there for a reason – to ensure that the product is not worthless (which is a risk) – and will not go away due to the current COVID-19 outbreak. You must request and verify test reports and other compliance documents (e.g. DoC) before placing an order.

Face Mask Buyer’s Guide

Masks available in the market nowadays can be roughly categorized as respirators and surgical masks, depending on the function they serve.

Respirators are widely used in fields of engineering, construction, chemical and other environments where hazardous air prevails. Qualified respirators are able to protect users from inhaling fine particles or toxic air.

Conversely, surgical masks were originally designed to be used for medical and clinical purposes and protect patients from fluids, splashes or droplets in the air.

There are pros and cons for these two types of masks, users should choose the suitable products based on their needs.

FFP1 Face Masks (EU)

Respiratory protective devices in the EU market are regulated by the PPE Directive. The standard EN 149, which is harmonized under the directive, classifies such devices into three categories based on their particle and bacteria filtration capability.

Currently, these respirators are recognized as FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3, abbreviated from Filtering Facepiece. The number represents the efficacy of filtration capability, the higher the number is, the more capable the respirators in filtering particles and bacteria.

FFP1 masks filter the least particles compared to FFP2 and FFP3 masks, with only an 80% filtration rate. FFP1 masks are generally used as dust-proof masks during various types of chores like “do it yourself” jobs, cleaning, drilling, and sandling. FFP1 masks are effective for blocking off larger particles like coal, silica, zinc, and cement.

FFP2 Face Masks (EU)

94% of all airborne particles must be captured by a mask in order for it to qualify as FFP2. Such masks should be able to block off particles like cotton dust, granite dust, hay, lead dust, and fume.

These masks are able to protect the users from the risks of influenza viruses such as avian influenza, SARS, pneumonic plague and tuberculosis.

FFP3 Face Masks (EU)

FFP3 masks can filter at least 99% particles and are proven to be able to block off very fine particles with diameters smaller than 0.001 microns, such as asbestos and ceramics.

Therefore, FFP3 masks provide higher protection to the users compared to FFP1 and FFP2 masks. This kind of mask is suitable to be used for medical, pharmaceutical and chemical purposes.

N95 Face Masks (USA)

The American National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) regulates the standards for respirators in the US market and categorizes them into 3 series and rating systems based on their filtration nature.

Respirators are classified in N, R and P series, with the filtration capacity indicated by number 95, 99 and 100. N-series masks are non-oil-proof, while the others are oil-resistant to varying degrees.

Qualified N95 masks are proven to be able to filter more than 95% of particles that are larger than 0.3 microns in diameter, such as coal, iron ore, flour, metal, wood and pollen, and other non-oil based liquids.

N95 masks are proven to be effective for protecting users against flu, swine flu, avian flu transmission, and air pollution.

N99 Face Masks (USA)

Qualified N99 masks are able to filter at least 99% of the particles that are larger than 0.3 microns in diameter, such as asbestos, bacteria, copier toner.

N100 Face Masks (USA)

N100 masks are proven to be able to block off 99.97% of the particles that are larger than 0.3 microns in diameter. Due to its denser structure, N100 masks are able to filter finer particles and thus are popular among users from the fields of chemical engineering, pharmaceutical, and constructional sites.

N100 masks are able to prevent the inhaling of substances like lead, cadmium, arsenic, and protect the users from airborne hazards like avian flu, swine flu, and other contagious diseases.

KN90 Face Masks (China)

The Chinese national standard for respirators is codified in resolution GB2626, enacted by the State Administration of Quality Supervision of China, which regulates the manufacturing and marketing of respirators from the perspective of material, structure, appearance, performance, filtration efficiency and labeling.

Currently, respirators are classified as KN and KP series, which the former is nonoil resistant and the latter is oil resistant. The filtration capacity is represented in number 90, 95 and 100, the bigger the number is, the more capable it is in filtering particles.

Qualified KN90 masks are at least 90% effective in blocking particles of which the diameter is less than 5 microns.

KN95 Face Masks (China)

Qualified KN95 masks filter at least 95% particles, with similar filtration capacity of N95, are often used to protect the users against bacteria, viruses, or air pollution.

KN100 Face Masks (China)

Qualified KN100 masks filter at least 99.97% of particles and are able to block off extremely fine particles such as asbestos, bacteria, and copier toner. They can be used for chemical engineering, pharmaceutical and constructional purposes due to the higher level of protection they provide to the users.

Surgical Masks (3-Ply/4-Ply/5-Ply)

Surgical masks are often used for medical and clinical purposes, protecting patients from bacteria and viruses. Commonly-used surgical masks in the market include 3-ply, 4-ply, and 5-ply surgical masks.

The typical structure of a 3-ply contains three layers, which are used to block fluids, filter bacteria and absorb fluids, respectively.

4-ply and 5-ply are thicker than 3-ply masks and in theory, provide more protection to the users.

United States

The FDA regulation 21 CFR Section 878.4040 categorizes surgical masks as Class II medical devices and regulates such masks should meet the applicable ASTM F2100 and ASTM F1215 standards for surgical masks, which specify the fluid resistance and filtration efficacy of the surgical masks.

Compliant masks are rated level 1, 2, or 3 based on the test results.

Level 1 masks filter out 95% or more of bacteria and sub-micron particulates, while level 2 or 3 masks block out at least 98%.

European Union

The EU requires that surgical masks must comply with performance standards elaborated by the standard EN 14683, which is harmonized under the Medical Devices Directive. According to this standard, a mask receives a rating of Type I, Type II, or Type IIR according to its effectiveness blocking bacteria and sub-micron particulates.

Type I masks must meet the minimum filtration rate of 95%, Type II and Type IIR masks must filter out 98% particles or more.

China

Chinese national standards for surgical masks are codified under the resolution YY0469, and states that masks shall filter a minimum of 95% of particles.
