    Bioplastic is made of chemical compounds that are derived from or synthesized by microbes or genetically modified plants.

    Plants such as sugarcane and corn, or microbes such as yeast are common sources used to produce bioplastics. In most cases, bioplastics should be degradable into water and CO2 in the natural environment within several weeks to several months.
